Liukin, Johnson win ESPY Awards

2008 Olympic gold medalists Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson each received a 2009 ESPY Award, ESPN’s fan-voted awards that honor the best achievements, moments and leading athletes of the previous year.

Liukin won the Best Female Athlete Award, beating out nominees Serena Williams, Candace Parker, Maya Moore and Natalie Coughlin. Johnson was named the Best Female Olympic Athlete, a category in which Liukin was also nominated. Johnson also received a nomination as Best Breakthrough Athlete.

The awards ceremony, which took place July 15 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, will air on ESPN Sunday, July 19 at 9:00 p.m. ET. For a list of 2009 ESPY Award winners, visit ESPN.com.
